New York Times ranks BVI as #2 best place to visit this year

United States media giant, the New York Times, has the ranked the British Virgin Islands at number-two in its list of top 52 best places to visit in 2020.

The BVI ranked ahead of ahead of Rurrenabaque, Bolivia; Greenland; and Kimberly Region, Australia which were all ranked in the top five. The territory was only bested on the list by the capital of the United States, Washington.

The BVI was also only one of two Caribbean Islands which made the list; with The Bahamas taking the 22nd spot.

Why is the BVI highly-rated

The New York Times said the BVI’s appeal stems from the expected reopening of a number of resorts throughout the territory, including Rosewood Little Dix Bay, which opened its doors in January. It also singled out Norman Island’s development plans for three hotels, a marina, and an observatory.

The American media giant also focused on some of the businesses on the islands that are practicing environmentally-friendly policies.

“Necker Island, the private island owned by Richard Branson, will finish rebuilding by April, and introduce uniforms made from recycled plastic found in the ocean; in 2019, the resort installed wind turbines that have enabled it to run on up to 90 percent renewable energy,” the New York Times stated.

“In summer 2020, the Bitter End Yacht Club will open a new marina using recycled materials and a market to provision boat crews … Cooper Island Beach Club on Cooper Island, a 15-minute water taxi ride from Tortola, plans to offer packages combining island stays with emissions-free sailing trips aboard a new electric-powered yacht from Voyage Charters,” the media house added.

Only last year, the BVI was ranked as the number-one best vacation destination in the Caribbean by online travel magazine ‘US News’.

The BVI edged out St Lucia who ranked second and the neighbouring US Virgin Islands in third.

Allowing cruise ships to continue to dock and let people off is plain and simple insane. I know the government officials need to fill their pockets but allowing this to continue is placing people lives in danger. If it continues please have all Belongers lines up at the dock to shake hands and kiss the ship tourists

We would probably be number 1 if we had more amazing sites like the Virgin Gorda Vulcano and the Pockwood Pond Paradise of Polution.

Lies! How much ad space was bought in the travel section? The BVI is in a mess and although I am thankful for those who decide to vacation here it is not wise to paint such a rosy picture! They have been reports of Yachts being broken in to on JVD and elsewhere. Better to have a true picture shown than have visitors come and not meeting their expectations!

“Reports?” What “reports,” and from who? There are 200 people on JVD. It is not a high crime area. Say what you will about the BVI, but compared to numerous other travel destinations, crime against tourists is the last thing anyone needs to be worried about.

Someone messed up on this report,is it our tourist board or the NYT reporter. People visit places based on what to do and see etc, Norman Island development is years way yet it is listed as one of the reasons to visit the BVI in 2020, come on guys, please do a better job in promoting the BVI.
