Nine countries to compete in BVI’s first ever women’s Squash tournament
The BVI Squash Rackets Association is set to create history when it hosts its first ever Women’s Professional Squash Association (PSA) competition in the upcoming week.
Female squash players worldwide will have a chance to add their name to BVI history when they compete in the three-day dubbed, Harneys’ BVI Squash Open.
The event will be held at the Tortola Sports Club starting on Thursday, May 16.
Head coach for squash at the Tortola Sports Club, Adam Murrills, said he is happy to have a female tournament of such magnitude occurring in the territory.
“This is a landmark event for squash in the BVI and I am particularly excited that the BVI Squash Rackets Association made the decision to host the event to complement the annual Men’s PSA BVI Open Championships which has been held here since 2014,” Murrills said.
He also appealed to the public to come out to support the players as the tournament is expected to be extremely competitive and will see representation from Brazil, Germany, Guyana, America, Canada, Egypt, Columbia, England and the Virgin Islands.
“This is the first time that a squash event in the BVI will feature an all-female cast and it would be great to create an atmosphere which the women deserve and also to witness some fantastic squash,” Murrills added.
Murrills also made mention of the sponsors, adding that the tournament would not have been made possible without them.
“Hosting an event like this requires external support and I would just like to say a massive thank you to Harneys, Deloitte, Commercial Dive Services (BVI), AZUR Consulting, International Motors and 305 Squash who have helped make this tournament a reality – it’s much appreciated,” the head coach stated.
Thursday’s first round of the knockout tournament will start at 5:30 pm, while both the quarter and semi-final games will be on Friday. The first match of the day starts at 10:30 in the morning.
The final is set to played on Saturday, May 18 at 5 pm.
