Nine new COVID cases recorded in the BVI

The British Virgin Islands has recorded nine new cases of the COVID-19 virus and three new recoveries.

This brings the total active cases in the territory from the previously-announced 14 to 20.

This is according to the latest COVID-19 dashboard report published on Wednesday, January 20, by the Minister of Health, Carvin Malone.

The last update which was issued last Thursday, January 14, indicated that 14 persons were actively positive for the COVID-19 virus. The data also showed that at the time, the territory had recorded a total of 121 cases of the virus.

The new figures presented on Wednesday noted an increase from the 121 total cases in the territory to 130 cases with 20 active cases, 109 recoveries and one death.

According to the new data provided, 13 of the 20 active cases were recorded on entry screening on Day 0, three on Day-4 of quarantine, and two through travel screening. The remaining two cases were detected through contact tracing measures.

Of the 20 cases, 19 are asymptomatic while one is mildly symptomatic. There are currently no hospitalised cases.

The new information presented also indicated that 10 of the cases are on the mainland of Tortola while the other 10 are on the sister island of Virgin Gorda.

To date, the laboratory at the Dr D Orlando Smith Hospital has tested a total of 17,690 samples from 17,673 persons.

Maybe we should have a traveling government meeting to discuss this! Need to keep the eye on the ball people! This is going to bite us in the a** if we get lazy. Vaccine is coming in February. Say Calm and Carry On PLEASE!

    • It says:

It is statistically improbable to have 20 cases with 19 being asymptomatic. Given that these people were tested prior to arriving, it is more likely that their tests were false positives. Does the health department re-test to make sure? No. This is all political to keep tourists out. Foy and Malone want their knees on your backs.

I strongly believe some of those positives on entry are false positives and that could explain the reason why almost all of them are asymptomatic.

Clearly an issue with the testing. Those numbers are next to impossible to replicate. Testing method and technique needs to be revised.

This is pointless information. If you report on this, you might as well report on how many people get the flu, have a cold, have runny poop. COVID is over idiots.

Now, compare those figures to the flu in years past… (because you’ll find 0 flu deaths reported for 2020). Ruin the livelihood of an entire country over 120 cases and 1 death, BRILLIANT!

Vaccine coming in February? And then what, borders open so the economy can survive? Many tourists are wondering if the 5 day quarantine will be in effect through the Spring

  10. Higgins says:

Vaccine coming in February? … and then what remove the 5-day quarantine requirement? There are thousands of tourists wondering.

  11. Tarik says:

Please remove the quarantine by Spring. Tourism needs to come back. Personally, I am trying to plan a wedding in the BVI for July (100 guests, a lot of $ for the local businesses) and will need to completely cancel if the BVI is not open by April and no one can book their flights. Just saying. Stay closed for miniscule cases and lose a lot of business for your people.
