PHOTOS: VG Fest opens, Dexta Daps delivers

The dusty atmosphere at the Roy O’Neal Festiville in the Valley on Virgin Gorda did little to deter fans of Jamaican entertainer Dexta Daps from having a grand time on night one of the annual Virgin Gorda Easter Festival.

Daps was the main act on Saturday night and brought the moderately-sized crowd into a frenzy when he delivered a captivating maiden performance on the sister island.

The Jamaican singer, with his provocative dance moves, belted major hits such as Mi C Mi Bed N Miss You, Jealous Ova, 7Eleven, Owner, Ride it, among others.

He shared the stage with Monae, the Hardcore Band, as well as OMG Live.

Festiville honouree

In the meantime, 73-year-old former government employee Roy O’Neal was this year’s honouree.

O’Neal has participated in the annual event for the past 50 years and is well known for roving during the parade on his bike, named after the cruise ship Queen Mary.

O’Neal was chosen as last year’s honouree. However, due to the events being scaled back, he had to wait a year to be honoured.

O’Neal was given a plaque and a fruit basket and he expressed gratitude for the recognition.

The festival will culminate on Monday.

Below are highlights from Saturday’s event.

I congratulate the Hon. Dr. Uhuru, the Hon. V. Wheatley, the Hon. S. Flax, the VG Carnival Committee and all others for honouring one of our humble citizens, Mr. Roy O’neal..

Such an gesture speaks volumes about how all of you are thinking, and it appears a thinking that is reflecting inclusivity of all people and not just a certain pedigree or class

Indeed, that honour was a slap in the face of classism, and rightly so!

Indeed, it wasn’t Mr. O’neal that won that honour, all of you did. Congratulations to all of you. You brought a degree of proudness to many.
