Police recapture wanted man who escaped custody New Year’s Day

BVI News understands that police have managed to arrest 29-year-old Jamal Freeman who was arrested earlier this year but escaped custody in handcuffs on New Year’s Day.

Freeman, who is reportedly from the East End, Long Look community was allegedly arrested and charged in relation to a dinghy that was stolen on Virgin Gorda last November.

In addition to charges for the dinghy, it’s understood that Freeman has been slapped with additional charges including a charge for escaping police custody.

It’s alleged that Freeman was sought by police after CCTV footage showed him taking a dinghy from the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour last November.

It took the cops two months to arrest him. But while in custody on New Year’s Day, the suspect told the cops he was feeling ill and needed to see a doctor. The police transported him to the Nurse Iris O’Neal Clinic, and while waiting for medical attention, he allegedly found a way to escape the facility.

Our news centre was not able to ascertain whether the suspect received the medical attention he requested. Sources say the cops searched the Virgin Gorda community extensively as they tried to apprehend the suspect.

In the meantime, it’s unclear whether Freeman was granted bail and when he is scheduled to appear in court to answer the several charges laid against him.

What’s next? Are they going to turn him loose on the streets again?

  3. Pure jokes says:

He managed to flee still handcuffed. Keep telling y’all handcuffing a prisoner in the front is a safety risk. If they are handcuffed from behind it is harder for them to run off.
