Rider accused of smuggling bike, threatening to shoot cop

Not the rider mentioned in the story.

A motorcyclist accused of threatening to shoot a police officer after being tased during a traffic stop last year has appeared before the Magistrate’s Court.

Charged with using threatening language, resisting arrest, engagement in smuggling, driving an unlicensed vehicle, driving without a license, and reckless driving is 24-year-old Ashemba Frett.

He pleaded not guilty to the offences when he appeared before Magistrate Hakim Creque on Monday, August 27.

It is alleged that police were on mobile patrol on February 2 last year when they saw the accused swerving a motorcycle across the Long Bush public road.

Police then moved to stop and arrest the accused on suspicion of reckless driving but Frett allegedly began to resist arrest and had to be stunned with a taser gun, the court heard.

“If you tase me again, I will shoot you,” the accused man allegedly told police.

He was later restrained and taken into custody.

Illegal bike

It is alleged that subsequent investigations revealed that the engine of the motorcycle in question is not legal in the BVI. Law enforcers, therefore, concluded that the engine must have been smuggled into the territory, the court heard.

Frett, in the meantime, has been was granted $30,000 bail and is scheduled to return to court on October 23.

Defence attorney Stephen Daniels is representing the accused.

Not fair: when civilian plot to commit murder the police says they can do nothing only unless the crime is committed but when the same is done against a police its charged as threatening language? Something is off here/ double standard.

Why do the police not enforce the law regarding these motorbikes and scooters? ? Many more are illegal and many constitute a noise nuisance.

Get them legal or get them off the roads.

  5. Interesting says:

Commissioner the photo in this story (Purcell Estate across form —— ——) is timely because there is a body shop which was issued a cease illegal activity by the Government since August 10th, 2018 and to date is still operating. This says mountain about the lack of respect that those people have for the Laws of the Virgin Islands. I wonder if the incident which happened a bit further down the road had happen on that street pictured would the police actions would have been as swift?
