Sections of the British Virgin Islands this morning experienced minimal effects of a 6.4 to 6.6 magnitude earthquake whose epicentre was approximately 160 miles away; specifically located South East of Guanica in Puerto Rico.

The brunt-impact of the tremor affected Puerto Rico one day after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake rock the Spanish-speaking nation and caused power outages and major property damage.

This latest quake happened during the early-morning hours of Tuesday, January 7. While no Watches, Advisories or Warnings were issued for the BVI from this event, the neighbouring Puerto Rico is reeling from the quake.

At least one dead, multiple injuries

Media reports from United States (US) news outlet CNN are that the Spanish-speaking US-territory is experiencing further power outages and at least one person — a 77-year-old man — was killed.

It has also been reported that at least eight other persons have been injured.

CNN reported this morning that Riko Gonzalez and his parents were awoken to a rumble and scurried out of their home in Yauco, near Indios in Puerto Rico when this morning’s earthquake struck.

“It was horrible; nothing compared to the [magnitude] 5s from yesterday,” Gonzalez reportedly told CNN. “People are afraid to go to bed, to then be woken up to worse earthquakes than the day before.”

It is reported that several other strong tremors followed the magnitude 6+ quake. One of those subsequent tremors included yet another magnitude 5.8 quake that struck just south of Indios at 7:18 am, CNN reported.

The same fault caused the 1857 tsunami that drained St Thomas harbour, over 250 vessels destroyed, over 200 dead, put the USA navy cruiser, carrying commissioners discussing the purchase of the Danish West Indies including St Croix, onto Strand Stree in Frederiksted, St Criox.
The tsunami also wiped out the village of the free African at kingstown and did damage in Road Town. It’s not known how many people died in Tortola, but the Danish newspaper reported “at least 168”.

This current event now relieves us from the “100 year” suggested spacing between events!
