Tourist Board introducing Wireless Network Strategic Plan in BVI

The BVI Tourist Board is planning to introduce a Wireless Network Strategic Plan in the British Virgin Islands.

Premier Andrew Fahie made the announcement during a recent session of the House of Assembly, where he said government is making the necessary moves to ensure tourism in the territory remains relevant as the BVI moves towards a digital economy.

“In advancing its mandate, the Tourist Board is desirous of providing mobile and hotspot WiFi services as a key marketing tool that will enhance the tourism experience for cruise visitors, day-tours and stay-over visitors in the BVI,” Premier Fahie stated.

“The Tourist Board is, therefore, soliciting proposals from qualified consulting firms to develop a Wireless Network Strategic Plan (Plan) with a near-term focus on WiFi deployment in key tourist sites and hire-vehicles and a long-term consideration of other wireless technologies (Wireless Network),” he further explained.

Seeking experience Consultant

Premier Fahie also said the desired consultant for this project will have to demonstrate previous work experience with a government agency or statutory body in developing plans to build wireless broadband networks.

He said: “The plan would be used to strategically develop the Tourist Board’s wireless telecommunication infrastructure to meet the needs of its target audience. The successful responder would utilise the plan and work on the Tourist Board’s behalf to construct, manage, and leverage certain Tourist Board assets and telecommunication infrastructure with third parties.”

Other plans to follow

Premier Fahie who is also the head of the territory’s tourism portfolio, further said there will be additional plans by the BVI Tourist Board which is expected to unfold soon.

“The BVI Tourist Board will shortly select a firm to develop a new and enhanced Web site for launching by the fourth quarter of this year. The Board is also in the process of selecting a firm to provide digital internet services for visitors throughout the territory,” he added.

    What a load of BUNKUM!
Our government can’t even stop Cable & Wireless from misidentifying some parts of the territory as being in Antigua which has entirely different treaties and allowances, so we have to get VPNs just to function and NOW they are talking about fixing comms up for tourists?????
    What about citizens?
