Tropical Storm Kirk has formed in the Atlantic while other weather systems continue to lurk in the area.

During a weather update Sunday morning, the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) described Kirk as well as another weather system called Tropical Depression 11 as being of “immediate concern to the British Virgin Islands”.

At 5 o’clock Sunday morning, Kirk was 2,500 miles from BVI and was moving in a westerly direction at 18 miles per hour.

Forecasters said Kirk had maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour and tropical storm-force winds extending to 70 miles from the centre.

“A high level of uncertainty exists with the track and development of Tropical Storm Kirk as it continues to move west. Worst case scenario is if the system were to continue at its present speed, it should be in the vicinity of the Lesser Antilles in five to six days. It is still too early to say what effects it will have on the BVI,” the DDM said.

Meanwhile, Tropical Depression 11 was about 688 miles east-southeast of the BVI Sunday morning and had winds of 30 miles per hour.

The weather system is expected to dissipate just of east of the Lesser Antilles Sunday night, the DDM said.

It added: “Remnants may produce unsettled weather in the BVI early next week. Possible rainfall amounts from Monday to Wednesday .60 to 1.2 inches.”

The DDM, however, noted that these forecasts are subject to change.

Residents are being told to “be prepared to take action in the event that they develop and pose a threat to the territory”.

The NHC track shows Kirk going well to the south of BVI, and never developing beyond a TS.

With the level of scaremongering. We need level headed news and forecasts. Not needlessly worrying “click bait” headlines everywhere.

IF the BVIDDM said Kirk was of concern to the BVI they ARE NOT doing their job. KIRK has not been anywhere near a concern to us. IF they keep calling wolf when it’s so far south no one will believe them when it is due to hit us. We are having the remenents of a depression that became a wave which will bring rain for the week.

Meanwhile it does seem we will have quite a large swell at the weekend and swimmers should beware

way too early to scare people.storm is 5 days away and may be not a storm when it reach the islands.

  8. An Observant says:

The major contributor to the acceleration and development of storm systems into major destroyers is the sea temperature.

Fortunately, the sea temperature is many degrees below normal this year, as compared to last year beforen Irmaria.

Result, there may not be sufficient heat in the ocean to fuel any systems into a destroying monster this year.

At least, that suggestion is based on decades of keen observation and personal education, not accumulated scientific data.

Meanwhile, the best is hoped for, as usual.
