VG airport closed again! Another fire truck malfunction in 5 months

The Taddy Bay Airport on Virgin Gorda has been closed indefinitely yet again.

A January 6 media release from the BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA) said, “the closure is due to an operational issue with the rescue and fire-fighting services vehicle”.

The BVIAA did not specify what issues the vehicle — which was only purchased a little more than a year ago — was experiencing.

It, however, said, “all efforts are being made to rectify the problem and to ensure that air service to the airport is resumed as soon as possible” and said the airport would remain closed “until further notice”.

BVIAA is now advising persons travelling to and from Virgin Gorda by air to contact their respective airlines for alternate arrangements.

This is the second time the airport’s fire truck has experienced a malfunction since August 2019.

In an August session of the House of Assembly last year, Premier Andrew Fahie had explained that the absence of a proper facility to house the firetruck contributed to the vehicle experiencing the August 2019 malfunction.

He said the truck, which was only at the facility for nine months at that time, was being left constantly exposed to the weather elements during the day due the lack of a proper garage facility for securing the vehicle.

For heaven’s and our tourist industry income, buy a back-up, even if it’s scecond hand . the fire personel can go to the college or somewhere and learn how to maintain these vehicles…they certainly have the time.

Whilst we’re discussing this, does Beef Island have a back-up vehicle? If not then i should have one too.

The members of these boards are too busy fighting political wars and focused on the wrong things so now we will pay for it as a Territory. This is only the beginning! Peak of season and our gem, VG is closed to air access because of a fire truck.

I heard that the facility housing the fire truck burned down. Get a back up even if it has to be towed to a fire.

Little Dix Bay Resort open for the first time in 4 years, and the airport is closed??!! This is not the first time the airport has been closed with bad timing for Little Dix Bay.

    Always negative comments from STRUPES

90% of tourists come to VG on a boat. Stop making like the sky is falling and go back to counting chickens in the yacht harbour.

SMH it’s like you naysayers WANT something bad to happen so you got something to speak about. I don’t see you fundraising for that backup truck, just crying. Like usual….

Just means we need to provide better facilities and mechanics. People stop being negative

  7. Deh Watcha says:

So what type of “mechanics” training is being thought at the trade school?

$14.5 million allocated fir tourist board plus over budget bun.5 million yet can’t get tourists on island!

I guess our arriving and departing guests will just have to use the facilities at Beef Island. Lately I have seen such responses as – “hey, if they don’t like it go somewhere else.” And, actually they are.
