Plans are underway to pave the Taddy Bay Airport on Virgin Gorda.

This was announced through a recently-issued tender notice inviting interested companies with aviation experience to provide planning, architectural, engineering consultancy, construction, and project management services to bid on the project.

“The runway at the airport remains an unpaved, sand and gravel airstrip measuring 3,100 feet. The award shall be made to a responsible respondent(s) taking into consideration the requirements and conditions set forth in the request for proposals and, if necessary, obtaining best and final offers,” the notice issued by the BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA) said.

The scope of work includes producing a uniform runway surface, with good wet friction characteristics and weight bearing capacity for a lifespan of 20 years.

Bidding details

The tender notice indicated that bidders must provide a brief summary of their company’s organization, experience, location of offices and the number of contractors that will be available for the project.

Interested parties are invited to submit proposals to the BVIAA no later than 4 pm on Monday, November 18.

The BVIAA, in the meantime, is warning against submitting false statements to win the contract.

“Any person who knowingly makes a false statement of material fact to the Authority in violation of any statute, ordinance or regulation, or who knowingly falsifies any statement of material fact made in connection with an application, report, affidavit, oath, or attestation, including a statement of material fact made in connection with a bid, or proposal, is liable to the Authority for a civil penalty of not less than $500.00 and not more than $1,000.00, plus up to three times the amount of damages which the Authority sustains because of the person’s violation of this section,” the athority said.

It further indicated that, “any person who aids, abets, incites, compels or coerces the doing of any act prohibited shall be liable to the Authority for the same penalties for the violation.”

Good news. But for safety incase of emergency, another six to eight hundred feet should be added to RW 21.Remember most of the high performance A/C’s that land there rely on brakes and not reverse trust.

While they are at it, the aircraft apron should be increased so people can park their aircraft. Airport should be good for turboprops and small jets.
