Visitor experience being enhanced with telescopes, WiFi

As the BVI moves to restore its once-booming tourism industry, a number of initiatives are being rolled out to enhance visitor experience in the hurricane-hit territory.

One of those initiatives includes mounting telescopes on each of the main islands of the BVI.

“These were a huge hit, especially over in Anegada,” said Tourist Board consultant Trefor Grant. “There are four other sites we want to add these. It really enhances the guest experience because they get to see different things from a different vantage point. We are going to be putting one over in Great Harbour, another one over on Anegada, we are going to put one in Sage Mountain on Tortola and we’re going to identify a place on Virgin Gorda …  to mount one as well.”

The board has also begun to activate WiFi hotspots across strategic locations for visitors to access.

Grant said hotspots are already active at the Road Town seaport on Tortola and the Cane Garden Bay area, which is a major local tourist attraction.

WiFi hotspots are also to be placed at the Crafts Alive village in Road Town as well as at the Baths on Virgin Gorda.

Another initiative to enhance tourist experience is the installation of hammocks at popular beaches in the territory.

“This project is just to enhance the mood and it can help people relax especially on the beaches,” Grant explained.

The tourist board said it is also kicking off a culturally-focused initiative to rehabilitate old-time BVI houses.

The telescope on Anegada to watch the flamingos is absolutely awesome! This will be a big hit on some other locations as well indeed.

Wifi would be quite handy on many locations as well. But we all know most of the time that wifi will be down unfortunately.

These are some good ideas keep them coming regardless of all the “Negative Nancies” who somehow manage to always find a problem with a solution and not the other way around. The important thing is to keep moving forward, not all ideas are guarantee to work but, without mistakes how would we learn.

Why don’t we mount a large telescope on the top of St John pointed towards the BVI? That way da tourists could look at our pretty places without having to pay the huge taxes to arrive and depart and they would have to deal with our broken roads, burning dump, and very slow internet.

  7. Anegada says:

the telescope on Anegada is a great success. I would recommend though that we used metered telescopes. A fee of a 25 cents for example. This will provide income for maintenance of the structures that hold the telescope and also defer the cost for the a replacement in the future.

  9. Elroy says:

When passengers get off a cruise ship they are hungry for any kind of free wifi signal. It’s a good idea as it keeps them in the area possibly shopping some more. Trust me, I’ve been there.

  10. Mr Shovels says:

I hope many people get to enjoy them before there are inevitably vandalized because folks around here don’t seem to like nice things

  11. Theo says:

The BVI doesn’t need human intervention to attract tourists. The humans destroyed it long before Irma ever did.
