Walwyn responds: ‘Fahie has tenuous relationship with truth’

Education Minister Myron Walwyn has labelled Opposition Leader Andrew Fahie as a dishonest politician who has used ‘school children’ to score political points.

“It’s unfortunate that after all these years Honourable Fahie still has a tenuous relationship with the truth,” the minister said.

Walwyn was responding to Fahie’s recent statement that he (Walwyn) broke the law by signing fake contracts to repair Leonora Delville Primary School.

Walwyn had signed a contract to repair the school in December and signed a similar contract two months later.

Fahie claimed Walwyn signed the first contract to repair to school though knowing government was broke.

CDB mixup

Walwyn said Fahie’s statements are misleading.

He explained that the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) provided loans for post-hurricane cleanup efforts. But, by the time the money was made available in December, his ministry had already cleaned up and reopened all schools.

As a result, the Education Ministry had to seek permission from the CDB to ‘repurpose’ the funds for repairs instead of cleanup, Walwyn said.

“We signed the first set of contracts in December in anticipation of the repurposing of the loan happening so that we could get the contractors moving by getting their workers together and applying for their certificates of good standing. And, of course, it was very difficult at that time to get contractors. So, we didn’t want it to get tied up in the private sector and when we needed them we couldn’t get them,” Walwyn explained.

He added: “By the end of December, the financial year rolled over and so we had to redo the contracts again with the very same contractors that we had engaged before. So it was never a case where money was an issue at all.”

Where’re the volunteers Fahie promised?

Walwyn then challenged the Opposition Leader on a claim that he (Fahie) had contractors or volunteers available to assist with repairs at the aforementioned primary school.

The Education Minister said he engaged Fahie to provide these volunteers but the Opposition Leader never did.

“I have made numerous requests to him (Fahie) asking about the people who had written to him. Where are the people you are talking about? Up to now he has not presented one person but now he wants to use an opportunity to gain cheap political points on the backs of the children,” Walwyn said.

If we can’t trust F— to tell us the truth in his capacity as l— of the O——-, how will we be able to trust him if he becomes Premier? We will be trading silence for lies!

This would make sense if what Myron is saying is true but all involved know that it is n—. Therefore Fahie is being truthful.

Myron go sit town where are the 1.6m wall money?

And we wonder why the BVI lags behind in terms of focussing on recovery! When all the politicians spend most of their time arguing, complaining, moaning and disrespecting each other ! The focus should be on making a positive difference not political point scoring – the No Direction Party is quite frankly a joke and n— of their elected members are for the people they represent – just themselves and making them look good!

  6. FIRST DISTRICT says:

As a resident of the First District I am clear that the M——– is not being forthright. The community wanted to fix the two schools in the area. The M———— played too many political games.

  7. Parent says:

Mr. Walwyn stop the games. You promised the children in December 2017 that the school would have been ready by January 2018. You did this knowing full well that this wasn’t possible.

  8. My take says:

Look who’s talking about being dishonest. A man with a $1.6 mill wall that really shouldn’t have been more than $500,000.

  10. Political Observer (PO) says:

It is a good best management practice for government not to exercise the contract and bidding community . A contract should not be advertised/negotiated unless the funding has already been secured to award the contract. Typically, funding for recurring expenses must be expense before the end of fiscal or calendar year. Nonetheless, a contract executed before the end of a fiscal/calendar year is an expenditure before the end of the year. On the other hand, construction and other capital projects are multi-year contracts that can crossed fiscal/calendar years. The bottom line is that there should be need for a contract and that funding is available and secured before hand to award a contract.

Moreover, since MEC funds were used to fund cleanup, why can’t CDB loan fund should be used to reimburse the MEC fund. Why does the CDB funding has to be repurpose? It seems as if the purpose for funds has not changed, did it?

  11. Hold on says:

Something doesn’t add up with what Myron is saying. If the contracts were signed in 2017 then why wasn’t the works done? Why was the same contracts resigned in February 2018? Something does not add up. It is clear who is not being honest and it isn’t Fahie.

  12. Jane says:

people in the business community have offered financial donations to many of the damaged schools but the principals cannot take the money because it would make the government look bad.

But lets get the facts straight….the BVI community locals and nonlocals were more than willing to be hands on and get alot of the work done especially when it comes to the schools but — want to play politics with our kids education just for the sake of a photo op or to say — did it.
