Work being done to provide 24-hour water

The Water & Sewerage Department said it is working to provide 24-hour service to ‘various communities’ currently affected by irregular service.

Department director, Pearline Scatliffe-Leonard, made the announcement for World Water Day on Friday but did not specify the communities that will see the promised improvement.

She also did not give a timeline when residents would begin seeing 24-hour water supply.

“Currently, we do have challenges and this we expect to have remedied just as quickly as the required infrastructure is in place, or measures taken toward the full realisation of such rights,” she said.

Scatliffe-Leonard further said her department said ‘much work’ was done to the territory’s water network since the 2017 hurricanes and that Water & Sewerage is working with production companies in ‘replacing and upgrading water mains in various communities’.

The department director, in the meantime, seized the opportunity to promote responsible use of the commodity.

“In our daily activities, be it at home, school, work or any other area we are all stakeholders of the water that we use, and therefore similarly obligated to protect, safeguard and maintain it,” she said.

A First World country has a reliable, quality and safe water supply. The BVI is more at a Third World, not First World, level. All its public works, utilities, infrastructure……etc are at a Third World level. Nice sounding discourse is all well and good but what is needed is action.

Who is responsible for putting the distribution system in place to convey potable water from the water production plant to customers, the WSD or contractor? Is Biwater producing the contractual daily volume (~2.5M)? And if no why not? And if yes, can the WSD accept the produced volume? If Biwater is producing the minimum required daily volume and the WSD cannot accept it, are consumers required to pay Biwater for its production?

Is WSD not part of the Works, Utilities and Transportation Ministry situation and condition assessment? To tell the truth, it seems as if government is busy as a bee bouncing from pillar to post without a plan. Every day some unit is announcing some new plan that probably was not properly fleshed out. Hon Premier call a standdown and conduct a territory-wide assessment. The People has given the VIP the mandate to govern so take the time to do it right. The people in the end will be impressed with an outcome that was well-planned and productive rather than a process that due to lack of proper planning fell short and produced little positive result, if any.
