Work on JVD Ferry Dock to resume in March, project to cost over $250K

Following a few months’ hiatus on the project, works on the Jost Van Dyke Ferry Dock is expected to resume next month, Premier Andrew Fahie has stated.

Speaking at Tuesday’s sitting of the House of Assembly, the Premier explained that works to the dock — which is located in Dog’s Hole, Jost Van Dyke — had commenced late last year but encountered a snag.

He said the works progressed until December when the concrete suppliers closed for the Christmas break. During that time, the BVI Ports Authority decided to make design improvements.

Premier said the Ports Authority then began consultations with Customs & Immigration departments to “ensure that these agencies’ requirements were incorporated into the revised designs”.

Fahie said the revised drawings for the project have since been approved, and the bill of quantities based on the approved designs are being finalized while contracts are being prepared.

“It is expected that works will begin mid-March 2020,” the Premier said. “This project definitely annoys me because it should have already finished. It hit some snags, and I would say for my safety, the end of March [for commencement]. But I am looking at it from before. I am not happy how this project has been delayed, but it is what it is. I am not going to throw my people under the bus.”

Project costing

Meanwhile, the Premier said works to the dock is projected to cost more than $250,000.

He said more than $70,000 has been spent on the undertaking so far. The remaining works will include erecting foundation walls, which will cost $52,000; electrical and plumbing works for $20,000; roofing at $43,000; as well as windows, doors and finishing touches, which are expected to cost $82,000.

The project was initially expected to commence in late November 2019 and completed in a three-month period.
