Headley fined $1,200 for marijuana possession

A Tread Falls man was fined $1,200 at the Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday after pleading guilty to possession of a controlled drug.

Twenty-two-year-old Akeem Headley was reportedly found with 16 grams of the substance on January 18, 2017.

He has up to three months to pay the fine or, in default, he will spend four months at Her Majesty’s Prison in Balsam Ghut.

Before his sentencing, his attorney Stephen Daniels urged the court to consider imposing a ‘small fine’ on his client as opposed to a custodial sentence.

Magistrate Ayanna Baptiste-DaBeo agreed with the attorney’s argument that Headley’s young age and the fact that he only had a ‘small’ quantity of drugs were mitigating factors. She, therefore, concluded that no custodial sentence was warranted.

What the court heard happened

The court heard that on the day in question, police were on duty in Road Town when they noticed Headley running towards the area known as Scatliffe Alley.

He has approached and subsequently searched.

Nothing illegal was found on his person. However, police searched his backpack and uncovered a butter container with the cannabis inside.

“Why is me you all search first?” Headley reportedly asked law enforcers.

He was then taken to the Road Town Police Station where he declined to participate in an audio-visual interview.

Headley is currently on remand for an unrelated matter.

The BVI must come of age into the enlightened age and stop making criminals out of young men and women for smoking weed, ganja, cannabis or whatever you want to call it. What injure more people in the BVI, weed or alcohol? Jamaica, Antigua…….etc have allowed and decriminalized possession of small quantities of weed. Still early but their societies do not seem to be stone of out their minds, non productive, adrift ….etc. Property and violent crimes are on the rise in the BVI; the focus should be on arresting these crimes. Has the RVIPF embraced the “ Broken Windiow” theory? Is the RVIPF focus on the weed ( no pun intended) while the forest burn? Before every manjack blow a gasket, I’m not advocating for people to break the law; residents should obey the law. By the way, I don’t smoke weed; I’m naturally Manda School nuts, loco….etc.

    • Really? says:

Well, is the boy is on remand for shooting someone? He IS a c******l, not just a small weed smoker… I would have extended his stay in jail rather than given him such a small fine.

Where the h**l is Tread Falls? Which agency, if any, is responsible for naming/renaming streets, buildings, villages, towns……etc? Who rename Spanish Town, VG ( original capital) from the Valley? Should the Valley be changed back to Spanish Town? Ok. It is a slow day and I’m bored. Lol!

  10. The truth be told says:

Seems like a lonely sole searching for closeness of companionship- sibling – company maybe. With no back up its a doggy dog world in the streets. Send him out of the territory to study seems a better option than to imprison such an intelligent young man. Why is it people quick to judge someone for something they alleged to have done without considering the cause and underling factors and not guilty stance. Once the root of a problem is not addressed-today their child tomorrow yours!!!!

Look at most young men in trouble. They are the only child or boy in a family unit. No immediate companion.

  11. Huh? says:

If he is in jail on remand how he going pay this fine? Or they looking for his family to pay? If he done on Remand the sensible to do was to give him the time and done. You going wait 4 months to see he ain’t pay the fine to then go give him jail time lol lol lol wow
