Walwyn tightlipped about NDP’s new reported trio of candidates
Local media reports have named three well-known public figures as the NDP newcomers who will contest At-Large seats in the next general elections, but party leader Myron Walwyn has neither confirmed nor denied those reports.
The reported candidates are high-school principal Sandy Underhill, House of Assembly speaker Ingrid Moses-Sctaliffe, and festival committee chairman Trefor Grant.
When BVI News contacted the newly-elected NDP chairman Tuesday morning, he declined to comment on the reports.
“The party will make a statement on the elected candidates at the appropriate time,” Walwyn said.
Mark Vanterpool, as well as current elected NDP At-Large representatives Premier Dr D Orlando Smith and Archibald Christian, have already given indications that they will not be seeking re-election.
The third sitting At-Large representative is Ronnie Skelton – the man who unsuccessfully challenged Walwyn for the NDP chairmanship back in June.
It is not immediately clear whether Skelton is still interested in running for NDP after that defeat. But, he hasn’t given any public indication that he doesn’t want to contest the next general elections.
Skelton’s running mate during the NDP’s June 2018 internal elections, Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull, has also been quiet about whether he will be seeking a second term as the representative for the Second Electoral District under the NDP.
Party sources told BVI News that only Walwyn, Marlon Penn, and representatives for Sixth and Ninth districts Alvera Maduro-Caines and Hubert O’Neal have declared their intentions to seek re-election as NDP candidates.
Deputy Premier Dr Kedrick Pickering indicated last month that he wants to run for another consecutive term. But he ducked questions on whether he will do so under the Walwyn-led NDP.
The next general election is constitutionally due in the summer of 2019 but there have been suggestions the political event might happen sooner.

NDP dead!!!
can this man be trusted considering the serious mistakes he made as part of the current team? Why didn’t he protect us from the bad investments in the airline? Why didn’t he conduct any due diligence?
Can’t get worst. Father send help, No wonder earthquake rumble so last night. What in the budget for a mental health clinic. We going need a big one, This all your fault orlando.
Thumbs up if you like these new candidates
Thumbs down if you don’t like these new candidates
I had confidence in the NDP choosing but these chosen candidates nope to move our country forward nope, Myron need to go back the the draw board not them.
The c—- going soon take over the BVI
Not Mrs Underhill no no, stay as a principal.
Wow! Never in my life would I have believed this is what election in the BVI would turn into. SMH Next thing we’ll hear is that Yellow running for office…but maybe she’ll do better than some of them lol
Why don’t you run from hiding behind the blogs
Ayo ain’t see this man building a islun man party?
We cant afford to have two back to back island women for our first ladies
How do you define an “Island Woman”, and who is the so called Island Woman ?.
An “Island Woman” is a female adult human being, who was born on a piece of sub-continental land that is completely surrounded by water.
Great reply “L”. By that definition; then persons born in BVI and of Virgin Islands heritage are considered Island Man and Island Women.????????
Case closed. So stop calling down people from other Caribbean countries. We are all from some where.
@ I wid u…et al. You sound very ignorant.
Not one of them have BVI ancestry.
IT’S THESE YOU ALL WANT TO REPRESENT THE BVI AGAINST THE UK???? MISTER MAN CAN’T BE SERIOUS????
All the king horses and all the king men
He is walking with all his friends
Well maybe he can trust them more than the current group that surround him!
I hope Myron know he not going to be premier again he just messed up his self picking the wrong people to manage the day to day affairs of our country. NDP DEAD, good luck Myron for being on the opposition side next year.
“them like m–“
man???
and woman…
Grant is a great choice. He has always been a great public servant and volunteer. We need more like him. He will do good things for his Country and believe he has a bright future.
Ndp lose election already even with these new faces them done, been done!
You VIP boys going crazy! Hahaha!
Boy you just lost all hopes of becoming premier with that w— dead team
2 divorsees LOL
As much as y’all don’t like the previous NDP at large team or whatever, this team is way more weaker then Ronnie, Archie & DR Smith. Bad choice Myron!!
Anyone who knows Myron knows he’s very calculated. I have no fear they will win!
They may win something but the question is what. Seats maybe but the real power going to RED and whoever he has with him. We have to get serious about our country now.
This at large team weaker then Ronnie, Smith & Archie..
This team is garbage
Same thing said when the ndp
When the debates begin I know for sure that the 4 candidates will deliver on a silver part
We the youth don’t have asked what the day or asked someone except for Archer he can deliver
Vip get ready let the debate begin
Can’t wait
New faces and national figures
As for me and those living with me, we are voting for Honourable Skelton, our next Premier. Son of the soil, with a heart for his country. I hope he is speaking with the Member for the Third and finding themselves some candidates to walk with them into the next House of Assembly. Many, many of us are waiting to hear. Now that’s the ticket.
Sore loser you mean. Let them come.
His heart fake and mechanical just like he! Cold and uncaring.
The man who has the western side of the country on fire and streaming with trash? right.
I voted for Ronnie last election but he has shown his true colors. He runs for the head of his party and he lost. Then he turns around and form another party? What country you care about? You care about yourself looking for power and position. If he had won he expected people to follow him but now he loses and he takes off elsewhere. I don’t know about any of you but that tells me a lot about his character. I wouldn’t even talk about Kedrick. No surprises there.
So you would suggest that Hon Skelton follow a leader who has shown that he has no respect for the people and has shown that he has bad intentions for our people. Give me a break talking nonsense.
@ Shame on Them
Every story has two sides and you are giving yours. But what about the other side? I will attempt to share some of it. Who is looking for more power than the current Chairman of the NDP? The c——— way he went about to get it has un—— with people telling you how they got —- to —- for him; with him telling some of the delegates —- about Ronnie; he is not a founding member of the party and should have let one of those take over the helm; he is partly responsible for the m— this country is in now with all the b– spending – the wall and the college are just about two; wait until people start talking about the other projects. Is that the kind of leadership we need at this time? Ronnie’s character is way above the current Chairman of NDP so please do not go there! The stories have not yet been told! Quit while you are ahead!
You the man Grant.
woman in power
Mr Grant good for festival not politics
Grant has great exposure in hospitality and tourism internationally and locally. He will bring what it takes to develop our Tourism Economy better than what it was prior to Irma and take into consideration how Irma has affected that industry tremendously. Think with an open mind.
I like how the VIP bloggers trying to downplay this team. Wait until Andrew announces his At-large, then we can talk.
I am not a VIP blogger but all this man did was reach for his cronies and expect that they will form the govt? Please these people will never challenge MYrun and his silly ideas, look at how the speaker had run the house of assembly, never i———, a dis—– and at the high school same thing, s—– idea after senseless idea and no one to tell the next any better. We’ll be up to our necks in BVI Airways type deals with this b—-.
“Mark Vanterpool, as well as current elected NDP At-Large representatives Premier Dr D Orlando Smith and Archibald Christian, have already given indications that they will not be seeking re-election.”
When the waters get rough everybody want to jump ship. SMH
Some will have lots to say. I applaud this team. Do the BVI proud
Good choices but where are the Sister Islands represented in this bunch? Sorry, you lost my votes right there. Lets see who VIP brings.
wow just wow..
All you see how the s—– of the h—- rag up the Governor when he come. Not I sah. F — next one is a d——–d all d——–e d——-. Got to hell W—– with them f– business.
This team means the break up of any resistance to Andrew fahie and the VIP. Fahie is certainly not a great candidate: however Andrew has retained the VIP brand, and with a good team of Virgin Islanders will sweep the carpet clean – Andrew is the favorite to become the next Premier
In the June 2015 general election, the Smith-led NDP rode the crest of the election wave and crushed the Fraser-led Opposition 11-2. The people give it a mandate to chart a new and stable course for the BVI. However, now, in 2018, it has the hit doldrums and is bottom dragging the trough with only 4 of the 11 member team thus far has committed to run on the NDP ticket. What cause the NDP to fall so far so quickly?
Were its financial management, poor planning, pre and post hurricane disaster management/performance, poor leadership, poor project management, infighting, electorate lack of confidence in government performance ………etc contributing factors to NDP fragmenting?
Clearly, it appears that none of the current other three at large members will not be on the NDP ticket. Are they retiring from active politics or they running independent or aligning with another party or forming another party? Further, are the D7, D2 and D5 reps running with NDP or going the way of their 3 at large colleagues? Is the demise of the NDP premature? If the demise is real, what a sad ending; it is painful to watch the disintegration.
There’s another way to look at this PO. I’m seeing the Pheonix burning only to return stronger. Slash and Burn has always been a very effective way to reinvigorate the soil making it more fertile. I see a new NDP. Young vibrant and intelligent. The dead weights had to be jettisoned off the vessel for fresh new bold leaserSHIP.
Lets be analytical with this team:
Mrs Underhill experienced in Education. Young and engergetic go getter. She can definitely help to propel the Education Department into a 21st century institution.
Mr Grant years of experience in the hospitality industry along with Hon Walwyn. We need people who understand the hospitality industry if we are to strengthen and grow it. The hospitality industry is integral to our economy.
Speaker of the House Moses, a legal mind is always a plus especially with the pending UK fiasco. An intelligent woman round and round who can represent the BVI on a local and international scale without fear.
And Honorable Walwyn to gel the team together. I see a young hard working team with lots to bring to the table. No slackers here. Very formidable team.
She had an opportunity to improve education as principal and she failed at it. Lots of students with literacy issues.
I don’t think you can blame literacy issues with a Principal of a High School.Learning to read and understand should have already occurred at Primary. If you are illiterate going into High School, you should be going to a remedial chool.
Ndpn?nn
ayo will hear who had and tek who man now, so brace ayo self
Bvislanders ayo cant see whats going on? Ayo blind? Ayo cant see this man building a team with mostly people with strong outside roots? Look at the 4 atlarges, not one of their parents born here. What this telling ayo? The indigenous is becoming extinct in their own country. VOTE CAREFULLY
WHO WILL THEY REPRESENT?
THESE 4 ARE NOT GOING TO REPRESENT THE REAL LOCALS
This is just an admission that the NDP has failed the territory and their constituents. Only once in history has a winning team allowed their starting 5 to leave after winning the championship and that was the 98 Bulls and we all know what happened in the years that followed. They are not bowing out while they are on top they are simply jumping off of a sinking ship that they steered directly into the iceberg. What Sandy should be doing is encouraging her friend and boss to invest in getting the students out of tents and into classrooms. While the opposition were fighting to get answers into the many questionable acts they was one person that enabled them to resist and refuse to provide the answers now she running She might as well have been the pilot of BVI Airways that flew the plane right out of the BVI. This is just more rubber stamps being reordered. Drain the swamp.
This is island man team: no generational virgin islanders: can never win!
Vicks is good for coal and forcough.
Those young people WILL bring a fresh cross cultural,\and global views to the BVI. They represent the new emerging culture of the BVI. The few narrow minded people who cannot look beyond island people or local people is sad. Look at the new demographics of the BVI and you would see why Myron and his team would champion the causes for all people in the BVI. THE bvi IS CHANGING LOOK AT THE MIXTURE OF HOUSEHOLD. Look at the emerging culture, look at the new generation, you cannot stop growth and progress. The population is no longer born here and born elsewhere. Those of you with this notion would get left behind. We live in a new world order. Myron good luck to you and your team
These island people looking to take over our country
This man is trying hard to divide and conquer us
If I was Walwyn I would run under a different brand name. The NDP as a political brand name is very toxic right now.
You don’t want to know the underhanded dealings and million dollar promises he had to go through to take over that party with those three letters, N-D-P. He is welcome to them. Hon. Skelton will win without those three letters. Best hope for ourcountry. RWS for Premier. Hip, hip, hoooorrraaay!
Mr. Grant for a brighter tomorrow. It’s that simple.
