Walwyn tightlipped about NDP’s new reported trio of candidates

Local media reports have named three well-known public figures as the NDP newcomers who will contest At-Large seats in the next general elections, but party leader Myron Walwyn has neither confirmed nor denied those reports.

The reported candidates are high-school principal Sandy Underhill, House of Assembly speaker Ingrid Moses-Sctaliffe, and festival committee chairman Trefor Grant.

When BVI News contacted the newly-elected NDP chairman Tuesday morning, he declined to comment on the reports.

“The party will make a statement on the elected candidates at the appropriate time,” Walwyn said.

Mark Vanterpool, as well as current elected NDP At-Large representatives Premier Dr D Orlando Smith and Archibald Christian, have already given indications that they will not be seeking re-election.

The third sitting At-Large representative is Ronnie Skelton – the man who unsuccessfully challenged Walwyn for the NDP chairmanship back in June.

It is not immediately clear whether Skelton is still interested in running for NDP after that defeat. But, he hasn’t given any public indication that he doesn’t want to contest the next general elections.

Skelton’s running mate during the NDP’s June 2018 internal elections, Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull, has also been quiet about whether he will be seeking a second term as the representative for the Second Electoral District under the NDP.

Party sources told BVI News that only Walwyn, Marlon Penn, and representatives for Sixth and Ninth districts Alvera Maduro-Caines and Hubert O’Neal have declared their intentions to seek re-election as NDP candidates.

Deputy Premier Dr Kedrick Pickering indicated last month that he wants to run for another consecutive term. But he ducked questions on whether he will do so under the Walwyn-led NDP.

The next general election is constitutionally due in the summer of 2019 but there have been suggestions the political event might happen sooner.

I voted for Ronnie last election but he has shown his true colors. He runs for the head of his party and he lost. Then he turns around and form another party? What country you care about? You care about yourself looking for power and position. If he had won he expected people to follow him but now he loses and he takes off elsewhere. I don’t know about any of you but that tells me a lot about his character. I wouldn’t even talk about Kedrick. No surprises there.

Every story has two sides and you are giving yours. But what about the other side? I will attempt to share some of it. Who is looking for more power than the current Chairman of the NDP? The c——— way he went about to get it has un—— with people telling you how they got —- to —- for him; with him telling some of the delegates —- about Ronnie; he is not a founding member of the party and should have let one of those take over the helm; he is partly responsible for the m— this country is in now with all the b– spending – the wall and the college are just about two; wait until people start talking about the other projects. Is that the kind of leadership we need at this time? Ronnie’s character is way above the current Chairman of NDP so please do not go there! The stories have not yet been told! Quit while you are ahead!

  29. Political Observer (PO) says:

In the June 2015 general election, the Smith-led NDP rode the crest of the election wave and crushed the Fraser-led Opposition 11-2. The people give it a mandate to chart a new and stable course for the BVI. However, now, in 2018, it has the hit doldrums and is bottom dragging the trough with only 4 of the 11 member team thus far has committed to run on the NDP ticket. What cause the NDP to fall so far so quickly?

Were its financial management, poor planning, pre and post hurricane disaster management/performance, poor leadership, poor project management, infighting, electorate lack of confidence in government performance ………etc contributing factors to NDP fragmenting?

Clearly, it appears that none of the current other three at large members will not be on the NDP ticket. Are they retiring from active politics or they running independent or aligning with another party or forming another party? Further, are the D7, D2 and D5 reps running with NDP or going the way of their 3 at large colleagues? Is the demise of the NDP premature? If the demise is real, what a sad ending; it is painful to watch the disintegration.

The dead weights had to be jettisoned off the vessel for fresh new bold leaserSHIP.

Lets be analytical with this team:

Mrs Underhill experienced in Education. Young and engergetic go getter. She can definitely help to propel the Education Department into a 21st century institution.

Mr Grant years of experience in the hospitality industry along with Hon Walwyn. We need people who understand the hospitality industry if we are to strengthen and grow it. The hospitality industry is integral to our economy.

Speaker of the House Moses, a legal mind is always a plus especially with the pending UK fiasco. An intelligent woman round and round who can represent the BVI on a local and international scale without fear.

And Honorable Walwyn to gel the team together. I see a young hard working team with lots to bring to the table. No slackers here. Very formidable team.

This is just an admission that the NDP has failed the territory and their constituents. Only once in history has a winning team allowed their starting 5 to leave after winning the championship and that was the 98 Bulls and we all know what happened in the years that followed. They are not bowing out while they are on top they are simply jumping off of a sinking ship that they steered directly into the iceberg. What Sandy should be doing is encouraging her friend and boss to invest in getting the students out of tents and into classrooms. While the opposition were fighting to get answers into the many questionable acts they was one person that enabled them to resist and refuse to provide the answers now she running She might as well have been the pilot of BVI Airways that flew the plane right out of the BVI. This is just more rubber stamps being reordered. Drain the swamp.

The few narrow minded people who cannot look beyond island people or local people is sad. Look at the new demographics of the BVI and you would see why Myron and his team would champion the causes for all people in the BVI. THE bvi IS CHANGING LOOK AT THE MIXTURE OF HOUSEHOLD. Look at the emerging culture, look at the new generation, you cannot stop growth and progress. The population is no longer born here and born elsewhere. Those of you with this notion would get left behind. We live in a new world order. Myron good luck to you and your team
